SKILLS
- Identify direct and indirect objects
- Le, la, l’, les: direct objects
- Lui and leur: indirect objects
- Y: places and complements with à
- En: complements with de and quantities
- Pronoun placement and revision
A quick reminder
A direct object (COD) follows its verb without a preposition: Lina regarde le chien → Lina le regarde. In the indirect-object (COI) examples with à or de: Lina parle à son amie → Lina lui parle; Lina parle de son projet → Lina en parle.
Le and la replace singular direct objects; les replaces plural direct objects. Le and la become l’ before a vowel or silent h: elle l’écoute. Les does not shorten.
With verbs such as parler à, écrire à and téléphoner à, lui replaces one person, male or female. Leur replaces several people and never takes an s.
Y can replace a location where someone is or goes, or a thing introduced by à: nous allons au stade → nous y allons; je réfléchis à ce choix → j’y réfléchis.
En can replace de + a thing, a place of origin, an indefinite quantity or a partitive object. Keep any stated quantity: elle a six feutres → elle en a six. En can be a direct or indirect object.
Put the pronoun before the verb in the present, and before the auxiliary in the passé composé. In negative sentences: je ne lui parle pas; je ne lui ai pas parlé; je n’en ai pas acheté.
With an infinitive, put the pronoun before the verb it belongs to: je vais le lire. With two pronouns, le, la or les comes before lui or leur: je le lui prête.
Check the verb’s construction: je pense à mon amie → je pense à elle. With avoir, a preceding direct object controls past-participle agreement: les lettres, elle les a envoyées.
